BORN FREE & RUNNING WILD

Michael Morpurgo’s wonderful play Running Wild is a fictional portrayal of a relationship between people and elephants. This close bond is illustrated in a deeply compassionate and emotional way. Sadly in the real world things are very different and Born Free asks everyone to be vigilant and remember to act responsibly and sensitively when encountering captive or wild elephants.

The Born Free Foundation is concerned about the plight of all elephants in captivity: in zoos, circuses, and at tourist sites across the world. While riding an elephant still features on many people’s wish list, the sad reality is that this activity may often be associated with a great deal of animal suffering. Elephant calves may be forcibly separated from their mothers and families, before being subjected to harsh and abusive training methods. In general, elephants used for riding and in human interactions will have undergone brutal abuse at some point in their lives in order to make them compliant. Elephant riding places elephants and people at great risk, and we urge people to avoid participating in this practice.

Life in captivity for elephants often consists of restricted opportunities for exercise and normal behaviour, being kept in bleak, barren conditions and being forced to live in unnatural or inappropriate social groups. The sad reality is that elephants do not thrive in captivity, and there is mounting evidence that captive elephants often suffer from foot and joint problems, behavioural abnormalities, obesity, and reproductive problems, and they die younger than their counterparts in the wild.

Born Free is working to end the suffering of elephants in captivity and to keep elephants where they belong: in the wild. Please help us / join us visit www.bornfree.org.uk
